ATLANTA, GA – September 25, 2019 To commemorate the 90th anniversary of the birth of Anne Frank and the 75th anniversary of her last entry in her diary, the Clark Atlanta University Philharmonic Society will present a performance of “Annelies” on Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at 7:06 PM at The Temple. This stunning choral work, by James Whitbourn, brings to life the diary written by Annelies (Anne) Frank between 1942 and 1944 when she and her family hid in the back of an Amsterdam warehouse. From the windows, Anne looked up to the beauty of the sky and downwards to the brutality meted out by the Nazis. The contrasting sights inspired some of the most profound and memorable thoughts in an extraordinary diary, read by millions of people throughout the world.

As this country struggles to answer the questions of today, the ensemble’s musical director, Dr. Curtis Everett Powell, believes that people will be inspired by Anne Frank’s moving journey, her humor, her fears, and observations. “It is our goal, through a free concert, to uncover how this music doesn’t just represent her experiences, but what they epitomize; a universal tale of spiritual strength and the triumph of the human soul over its physical surroundings,” said Powell.  “We hope that the audience will, through this music, connect and engage the heart of the human experience with a story of the triumph of the human heart over evil.”

The concert will feature the phenomenal soprano, Kayla Harriett. Located in Midtown Atlanta and founded in 1867, The Temple is Atlanta’s oldest and largest Jewish synagogues. The Temple is located at 1589 Peachtree Street, NW Atlanta, GA 30309.
