Iraqis in Pajamas: Iraqi Jewish Punk Rock

November 10, 2018 Brookhaven Free

Atlanta Welcomes Seattle Band Combining Iraqi Jewish Prayers, Original Punk Rock, and Inspirational Stories of Healing and Transformation

For “Iraqis in Pajamas” singer, songwriter, and bass player Loolwa Khazzoom, music is medicine. She sings about healing, and singing is her healing – taking a raw and unflinching look at topics including domestic violence, cancer, and social conformity; combining the sacred Iraqi Jewish music of her ancestors with the original punk rock of her soul; and belting out angst-ridden songs in a combination of English, Hebrew, and Judeo-Arabic. Her band offers a unique and uncompromising musical experience, inspiring audience members to think deeply about what it means to care, to heal, and to embrace the magic of transformation.

On November 10 at Congregation Or VeShalom, Khazzoom offers the music- and story-driven event, “Personal and Collective Healing at the Intersections of Iraqi Jewish Heritage and Original Punk Rock,” in which she performs a set of Iraqis in Pajamas songs and shares the personal stories behind them, as a springboard for group conversation and exploration. The Congregation Or VeShalom event is at 1681 N Druid Hills Rd NE, from 7:30 – 8:30 pm.
