What: On Friday, March 17th, the Southeast Regional Office of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF will host the third annual Evening for Children First to celebrate UNICEF’s lifesaving work and honor UNICEF Ambassador Laurence Fishburne with the Global Philanthropist Award for his longstanding commitment to make the world a better place for children.
The evening will include a seated dinner, live auction and presentation to highlight UNICEF’s programs that put children first. The event will raise critical funds to support UNICEF’s efforts to save and protect the world’s most vulnerable children.
Why: UNICEF works in more than 190 countries and territories around the world and has saved more children’s lives than any other humanitarian organization. The evening is a celebration of UNICEF’s work, as well as a tribute to the outstanding humanitarians who make our work possible.
Laurence Fishburne has served as a UNICEF Ambassador since 1996. He has traveled with UNICEF to visit programs for children affected by HIV/AIDS in South Africa and rehabilitation programs for war refugees and former child soldiers in Côte d’Ivoire and Liberia. In June 2010, he hosted a cultivation dinner in support of UNICEF’s emergency relief efforts in Haiti after the earthquake. In 2000, Laurence was given the Child Survival Award, established by UNICEF and The Carter Center, in honor of his significant achievements for child survival, protection, and development around the world. In 1999, he narrated the UNICEF video The State of the World’s Children and lobbied on Capitol Hill for the approval of the U.S. Government’s annual contribution to UNICEF.
